Does army victory mean peace for Sri Lanka?

The Tamil Tiger torrorist leader Velupillai Prabhakaran has been killed, Is the war now over in Sri Lanka?

The announcement on state television came shortly after the military said it had surrounded Prabhakaran in a tiny patch of jungle. There have been street celebrations in the capital, Colombo.

Prabhakaran led  in a bloody civil war for 26 years fighting for a separate state for Tamils in the north and east of Sri Lanka.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict and thousands displaced. There is still widespread international concern about civilians who may have been caught up in the fighting.

Are you in Sri Lanka?

What is your reaction to the news?

Have you been taking part in the celebrations?

What does the Sri Lankan government need to do to ensure lasting peace?

Does this mean an end to the conflict in Sri Lanka?

  1. As a Sri Lankan Im happy about the victory. this should have happened long time back. But now sri lankan government has a big task to do ensuring the peace and unity between people. Why sudden international concern about civilians. Do u need war and more killing between two groups again. Now its over without international support. All we need peace in sri lanka and we don’t want to our separate our country all we need is one nation.

  4. Well several points here...glad that the war is over. But i think ppl need to think more towards maintaining the peace by demonstating equality in the country. If ppl go and try to abuse physically or verbally other ethnic groups, this is going to start another war. No one wants that!
